The Parkdale Food Centre team can be found regularly turning healthy and nutritious ingredients into soul-warming meals alongside their neighbours in the Parkdale Food Centre’s community kitchen. Their neighbours are a mix of friends, business owners, volunteers, and the people who rely on the Centre for food that keeps them alive and healthy. In fact, if you were to stop in and visit the Centre on any given day, you may never be able to figure out who plays which role, and that really doesn’t matter.
What matters most is that everyone involved has a deep dedication to providing fresh, local, wholesome foods in a safe and welcoming community space. In essence, The Parkdale Food Centre reflects the values of its Board, Executive Director Karen Secord, and the community in which it resides.
Karen is a disruptor and an unrelenting force for good. When Karen arrived at the Centre, she brought with her a deep-rooted belief that every person in her community deserves the best of what the Centre could offer. She prioritized access to healthy food for those in need and providing resources that promote awareness on how to live a healthy lifestyle, and facilitating positive community participation.
Although the Centre is burdened with ever-diminishing resources – like so many other community organizations – Karen capitalized on building deeper relationships with the kind and supportive business community that surrounds her. What she has found are caring local business owners that respect and support her ambition, knowledge, and determination to make her vision a reality.
The result of this powerful combination of forces is a community refuge that feeds the bodies and souls of its neighbours and stands as an example of all that is good in strong, caring communities across the world.
This is not your average food bank – but it could be.
